There is a tiny piece of safety equipment hanging from many hiking backpacks that people rarely think about.
A whistle.
In fact, take a look at your backpack. Many modern hiking packs have one built directly into the sternum-strap buckle. You may have been carrying a safety whistle for years without realizing it.
If yours doesn't have one, add one.
They're inexpensive. They weigh almost nothing. They don't require batteries or cell service. From the perspective of people who actually search for missing hikers, whistles work.
WHEN WE'RE SEARCHING FOR YOU
Ground searching involves a lot of listening.
Search teams will stop, call out and listen for a response. Then we move, stop and do it again.
If you're the person we're looking for, the problem is that your voice isn't actually a particularly powerful signalling device.
There is some fascinating research on this. A 2024 Canadian study published in the Journal of Search & Rescue measured how far loud human voices could be understood in wilderness forest. The people calling were producing approximately 88–89 decibels at one metre.
The average distance at which their words remained intelligible was about 98 metres in coniferous forest and 135 metres in deciduous forest. Under some of the conditions tested, once searchers were beyond approximately 200 metres, they couldn't hear the caller at all.
Wind and ambient noise make an enormous difference. So does which direction you're facing.
Now imagine you're the missing person.
Your phone died hours ago. Darkness has fallen. You're cold and exhausted. Maybe you've injured yourself. Somewhere through the forest you think you hear Search and Rescue calling.
So you start yelling.
HELP!
Again.
HELP!
Your voice gets weaker. Your throat gets sore. The search team may still be hundreds of metres away.
This is where that tiny piece of plastic on your backpack becomes incredibly valuable.
Blow your whistle.
A Fox 40 Classic, for example, is rated at approximately 115 decibels. The manufacturer says it can be heard up to a mile away under suitable conditions.
Real mountains are obviously more complicated than a specification sheet. Wind, waterfalls, terrain, vegetation and atmospheric conditions all affect how sound travels.
But the underlying physics is pretty simple:
A good whistle is considerably louder than your voice and requires far less effort to produce that sound.
The SAR research itself notes that whistles typically have a greater detection range than shouting. That can matter enormously when we're trying to find you.
THREE BLASTS = HELP
Three short whistle blasts are a distress signal.
Blow three times. Pause. Listen. Repeat. Try signalling in different directions too — sound travels in strange ways in the mountains, bouncing off cliffs and terrain. Once we hear you, we'll follow the sound.
There's another reason the three-blast pattern matters. Every year, people report hearing a single whistle in the mountains that turns out to be wildlife. Varied Thrushes can sound remarkably like a distant whistle, and marmots whistle too. We investigate these reports, only to discover we've been sent on a wild goose chase.
So ask yourself: Did you hear three clear, deliberate blasts? If not, keep listening. It might be wildlife.
A single whistle-like sound isn't the distress signal. Three deliberate blasts in sequence are.
OTHER USES
Whistles are also incredibly useful mountain communication tools.
You might see a skier heading toward a hazard or an avalanche release above someone. A hiker may be walking toward dangerous terrain. A member of your group may be getting too far ahead. You may knock a rock loose above someone or simply need another person to STOP and look at you immediately.
Across an alpine slope, through forest, beside running water or in strong wind, yelling doesn't always work.
A sharp whistle blast often will.
Before everyone carried phones and small backcountry radios, whistles were one of the simplest ways climbers, mountaineers and rescue teams communicated over distance.
We still use them.
ROPE RESCUE & CLIMBING
In technical rope rescue and climbing, voice communication can become extremely difficult. Someone may be dozens of metres above or below you, around an edge and completely out of sight.
Add wind, waterfalls and steep terrain, and shouted commands can quickly become unreliable.
One whistle system we use in rope rescue is SUDO. The position of the letter tells you how many blasts:
1 — S — STOP
2 — U — UP
3 — D — DOWN
4 — O — OFF ROPE
It's brilliantly simple: four commands communicated with nothing more than sound.
Of course, today we also have radios. We love small backcountry radios like Rocky Talkies because being able to actually talk to your partners is enormously useful.
But not everyone has one, and radios don't make whistles obsolete.
Batteries die. Electronics fail. Radios get dropped. Sometimes you don't need to have a conversation.
You just need someone to hear you.
GET A GOOD ONE — AND PUT IT WHERE YOU CAN REACH IT
For mountain travel, a loud pealess whistle is ideal. With no moving ball inside, there is nothing to freeze or jam. We recommend a Fox 40 or similar loud pealess whistle as part of your backcountry equipment.
Clip it to your helmet, shoulder strap or somewhere else you can reach immediately. Don't bury it at the bottom of your pack.
Some backpacks even have small whistles built directly into the sternum-strap buckle — check yours to see if you already have one.
Everyone in your group should have their own because the person who becomes separated may not be the person carrying the group's emergency equipment.
When your phone is dead, it's dark, you're sitting somewhere in the forest and Search and Rescue is out there calling your name, you'll be very glad you have one.
