An official provincial Air Quality Advisory is currently in effect for Squamish and the Sea-to-Sky corridor due to variable wildfire smoke moving across B.C.'s South Coast. Local smoke is causing hazy conditions, and Environment Canada has concurrently issued a yellow heat warning for Squamish as temperatures approach 32°C.
Lions Bay Search and Rescue is asking hikers to strongly reconsider mountain activities until conditions improve.
The combination of extreme heat, wildfire smoke, reduced visibility, and poor air quality significantly increases the risk of dehydration, heat illness, exhaustion, and medical emergencies in the backcountry. Smoke and weather conditions may also affect helicopter operations and delay rescue efforts.
The mountains will still be there when conditions improve. Please consider postponing non-essential hikes over the next few days.
