During a recent Search and Rescue response, an iPhone using satellite connectivity was the subject’s primary method of communication while they were off-grid. The incident highlighted some important limitations in how satellite messaging works during an active SAR response, and we want to share those lessons with backcountry users.
When your iPhone is off-grid, the Search and Rescue team responding to you may not be able to simply call or text you directly - even though you may still be successfully messaging family or friends by satellite.
We experienced this firsthand.
During the rescue, our Search Managers had the subject's phone number and repeatedly attempted to establish direct communication. We were never able to get through.
At the same time, the subject was successfully communicating by satellite with his sister and other established contacts.
The phone was communicating. We just couldn't communicate directly with it.
WHY?
There are actually two different Apple satellite systems involved.
First, there is Messages via satellite, which lets you communicate with family and friends when you're off-grid.
But Apple restricts who can initiate those conversations.
Apple says that Emergency Contacts and members of your Family Sharing group can initiate an SMS conversation with you via satellite. For everyone else:
“Anyone else must first get an SMS message from you (via satellite) before they can reply.”
Apple's technical documentation goes further. An incoming SMS can be delivered by satellite if you have messaged that sender while off-grid within the previous 24 hours, or if the sender is an approved Emergency Contact or Family Sharing group. Otherwise, the message is held until your phone returns to a conventional network.
Think about what that means during a rescue.
The Search Manager coming to find you isn't going to be one of your Emergency Contacts. You've probably never messaged our phone before.
We may know who you are, know you're in trouble and have your phone number - and still be unable to initiate an ordinary satellite conversation with you.
EMERGENCY SOS WORKS DIFFERENTLY
Apple's Emergency SOS via satellite has its own communications pathway.
Apple's responder documentation is very clear:
“Currently, there is no way for a search and rescue manager, incident commander, or field responder to communicate directly with a reporting party.”
Instead, the Emergency SOS conversation is handled through the Apple Emergency Relay Center and then a Public Safety Answering Point.
Here in our region, E-Comm 9-1-1 is our primary Public Safety Answering Point - the emergency communications centre that initially receives and routes 911 emergencies.
The emergency response chain goes as follows:
iPhone Emergency SOS via Satellite
→ Apple Emergency Relay Center
→ E-Comm 9-1-1
→ RCMP / BCEHS / Fire
→ Search and Rescue activated
Search and Rescue cannot self-deploy. Police, ambulance or fire must request the SAR team.
SO HOW DOES SAR TALK TO YOU?
Once SAR is activated, our Search Manager cannot simply join your Apple Emergency SOS conversation.
Instead, we have to communicate through Apple's Emergency Relay Center:
SEARCH MANAGER → APPLE EMERGENCY RELAY CENTER → SUBJECT
and then:
SUBJECT → APPLE EMERGENCY RELAY CENTER → SEARCH MANAGER
Our Search Manager gives the Apple operator the questions or instructions we need sent to the subject. Apple sends those through the satellite connection, receives the subject's response and relays it back to us.
Apple's own SAR documentation describes this process and tells emergency dispatchers to obtain specialized questions and instructions from SAR leadership and relay them to the subject. It's limited to 160 characters.
THIS ISN'T UNIQUE TO APPLE
It's important to be fair about this.
A Garmin inReach also doesn't give your local SAR team a direct satellite messaging connection to your device. Its SOS communications are handled through Garmin Response in Texas, which acts as an intermediary.
Satellite SOS systems rely on emergency coordination and relay services.
The concern we're now examining is how effectively that relay works once Search and Rescue is involved.
We've spoken with Search Managers from multiple SAR teams who report challenges using Apple's relay process, including difficulty confirming whether messages were delivered, information not always being proactively passed back to SAR, and questions or answers sometimes being incompletely relayed.
That's particularly important in mountain rescue.
We may need to know: Can you walk? How serious is the injury? Where are you relative to the trail? Are you above or below a cliff? Are you sheltered? What equipment do you have? Can you move to an extraction point?
Accurate two-way information can directly affect the rescue plan.
WHY THIS MATTERS NOW
More people are relying on satellite technology to request rescue.
According to provincial D4H statistics, iPhone Satellite SOS represents approximately 12% of recorded initial SAR alerts in B.C. so far in 2026.
That's a significant number — and it's likely to grow. As satellite capability becomes built into smartphones, some backcountry users may question whether they still need a dedicated satellite SOS device.
We still encourage carrying one. A dedicated satellite communicator has a purpose-built antenna, is generally more rugged than a smartphone, and gives you a separate emergency communications device if your phone is damaged, lost, out of power or otherwise unavailable.
Apple Emergency SOS via satellite is an important and potentially lifesaving technology. If it's the tool you have when you need help, use it.
But backcountry users should understand what it does and how it works. It also places greater importance on having well-informed Emergency Contacts who know your trip plan, route and equipment and can provide that information to emergency services and SAR when needed.
WHAT CAN YOU DO?
Set up your Emergency Contacts before heading into the backcountry.
Leave a detailed trip plan with someone you trust, including your route, destination, vehicle location and expected return time.
If you're communicating with family while off-grid, don't assume SAR can communicate with you the same way.
If your family or emergency services gives you the phone number of the Search Manager trying to reach you, initiate the SMS conversation yourself. Apple's satellite messaging rules allow an otherwise unfamiliar number to reply after the off-grid user initiates the conversation.
And if you're communicating through Emergency SOS, stay engaged with the Apple Emergency Relay Center. They may be the communications bridge between you and the Search Manager planning your rescue.
