Nauseous Hiker on Mount Brunswick

Lions Bay Search and Rescue was tasked by BC Emergency Health Services to assist two hikers on Mount Brunswick after one member of the party became ill near the false summit.

The pair had started their hike from Lions Bay earlier in the day. After reaching the false summit, one hiker developed nausea, dizziness, and weakness, and was unable to continue. The subjects had water, food, appropriate clothing, a cell phone, and bear spray, and were able to provide an accurate GPS location.

With a limited operational window available, LBSAR & Talon Helicopters quickly responded to the incident. To maximize aircraft performance in the summer heat, only two rescuers were inserted to keep the helicopter within its load limits.

A hover entry was performed at Brunswick Col to insert the rescue team, followed by a hover exit to safely extract the patient.

Lessons

Medical issues can happen to anyone, even experienced hikers on familiar terrain. Heat can worsen an illness that may have already been developing, and nausea is one of the early warning signs of heat-related illness.

Remember to:

1. Stay well hydrated and replace electrolytes, not just water. If you pass a stream, soak your T-shirt or hat - evaporation helps to cool the skin.

2. Eat regularly to maintain energy levels.

3. If you begin feeling dizzy, nauseated, or unusually weak, stop, rest in the shade if possible, and don’t ignore the symptoms. Early intervention is often the best way to prevent a more serious emergency.
