Six Days Lost: Why Couldn't SAR See Him?

Seven lessons from an extraordinary Coast Mountain survival story

This morning, Squamish Search and Rescue published a remarkable map showing the combined ground and air tracks from the search for Stanislav Volo.

Look at that map for a moment.

The yellow lines criss-cross the mountain. Ground teams and mountain rescue teams searched on foot. Helicopters conducted visual searches while also using FLIR thermal imaging, LifeSeeker cellphone-location technology and infrared night-vision technology. Drones searched from above, including systems using AI to identify tiny pixels of colour or contrast that might be a person hidden in the landscape.

Areas were searched repeatedly, from different directions and using different technologies.

Somewhere in that mix of yellow spaghetti lines sat Stanislav.

So why couldn’t we see him?

A search is a lot like a good detective story. You start with fragments of information and try to work out which ones matter. A photograph. A timestamp from an upload. A witness statement. A cellphone trace. Perhaps a light spotted on a mountainside. A reported cry for help. Then someone is absolutely certain they saw your missing person somewhere completely different.

Which clue do you trust? Which one changes the search area? Which one sends valuable resources in the wrong direction?

These aren’t theoretical questions. They are real decisions Search Managers have to wade through while teams are already moving through the mountains and the clock is ticking.

In Stanislav’s case, there were some remarkably good clues. But the search area was enormous — a three-dimensional landscape of dense coastal forest, cliffs, gullies and drainages. For two nights, torrential rain hammered the search area. Low cloud ceilings and thick cloud sometimes prevented helicopters from getting into the terrain at all. At other times, visibility dropped to only a few metres.

Terrain also places limits on where searchers can be sent safely. Search teams may be capable of operating in extremely technical terrain, but getting them there requires the right people, equipment and conditions. A search cannot unnecessarily endanger rescuers in an effort to reach every possible piece of terrain.

So let’s unpack this search.

It’s one for the history books.

THE FIRST CLUES

Stanislav, 43, stepped off the Sea to Sky Gondola at approximately 11:33 a.m. on Sunday, August 30. His plan was to travel into the Mount Habrich area and return to the gondola.

Surveillance footage provided the first solid clue: a confirmed person, place and time and, importantly, an image showing exactly what he was wearing.

Later, other hikers reported seeing someone believed to be Stanislav in the Shannon Basin near the Habrich climbers access trail. The timing fit his expected direction of travel.

Witness statements are valuable, but they aren’t GPS coordinates. People misremember times. They mistake one person for another. Search Managers have to decide how much weight to give each piece of information and constantly reassess as new evidence arrives.

Then came a series of clues from Stanislav’s phone.

At approximately 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Stanislav called his wife. She missed the call. At approximately 9:50 p.m. that night, his phone connected with the Chance Creek cellular tower.

That was important, but it wasn’t a location. A connection to a single cellular tower couldn’t provide GPS coordinates or triangulate his position. What it could provide was another piece of evidence about which side of the mountain his phone might be on.

Almost two days later, the phone appeared again.

At approximately 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Stanislav managed to call 911. The call was extremely brief. He managed to communicate that he was “stuck on the mountain.” Then the connection dropped.

His family later listened to the recording and confirmed that they recognized both his phone number and his voice.

Again, there was no GPS location. But his phone connected through the Chance Creek tower, reinforcing the evidence pointing toward the north side of Habrich.

Most importantly, the call confirmed something enormously important: Stanislav was alive, conscious, and still able to respond.

By Tuesday evening, Search Managers were assembling a picture from exactly the kinds of fragments that make wilderness searches so complicated: surveillance footage, witness reports, cellphone activity, terrain, his intended route and now a brief 911 call.

None provided the dot on the map everyone desperately wanted. Together, however, they were beginning to tell a story.

IF YOU ONLY HAVE ONE CALL, CALL 911

There is an important lesson in Stanislav’s brief connection.

If you have cell service and you're in trouble, call 911 first — not your family.

SAR sees this surprisingly often. Someone is lost, injured, frightened or watching their battery die, and their instinct is to call the person they trust most — their spouse, parent, friend or family member.

That is completely understandable. In a frightening situation, reaching for someone you love is instinctive and feels safe. But if your battery is critically low or you have only a fleeting moment of reception, call 911 first. That gets the emergency response started and gives dispatchers the opportunity to gather your location and whatever other information the connection allows.

If your 911 call drops and you later get even a momentary blip of reception, send your coordinates. If you reach a loved one instead, give them your coordinates immediately and tell them to call 911.

Know how to find those coordinates before you need them. On an iPhone, the Compass app displays your latitude and longitude, and most mapping and navigation apps can also provide them.

SO, WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED?

Once Stanislav was safely out of the mountains, he was able to fill in many of the missing pieces in news interviews.

His phone died near the top of the mountain, and he could no longer find his way down. His own photographs from that day help explain why. He was walking in cloud — what we sometimes call walking inside a ping-pong ball because everything around you is white. Large cliffs and terrain features disappear into grey only a short distance away.

He began to panic as he lost the trail.

Then he heard something.

Stanislav believed he was hearing Highway 99. With about four hours remaining before the gondola closed, he made a critical decision: he would descend toward the sound.

It wasn’t Highway 99.

It was pipeline construction on the other side of the mountain — near the Indian Arm FSR.

This all happened before the massive search effort that followed. Stanislav descended into increasingly difficult terrain and eventually slipped and fell in a drainage, hitting his head, fracturing his heel and cracking his wrist.

At that point, he realized he could no longer retrace his route. What had begun as a navigation problem had become a serious mobility and survival problem.

Eventually, Stanislav found a small sheltered area near a waterfall where he had access to water and some protection from the weather. He spent several nights there, waiting for his injuries to improve.

Meanwhile, a massive search was happening around him.

His experience gives us some important lessons.

#1 WHITEOUTS & NAVIGATION

In thick cloud, navigating is extremely difficult. You may be able to see only metres ahead and lose sight of trail markers, flagging, cairns and surrounding terrain.

Getting lost often isn’t one catastrophic decision. It’s a chain of small decisions made with increasingly poor information.

If you can no longer confidently identify your route, stop. Pull out your map, GPS or offline mapping and establish where you are before continuing. Continuing into terrain you cannot see or understand can turn a relatively simple navigation problem into something much more serious.

#2 HUG A TREE

“Hug a tree” doesn’t literally mean you need to embrace the nearest Douglas fir. It means stop moving.

AdventureSmart teaches the same principle through S.T.O.P.: Stop, Think, Observe, Plan. The idea is to interrupt the fear-driven urge to keep moving and replace it with deliberate decision-making. Stop. Think about what you know. Observe your surroundings and resources. Make a plan before you act.

When people become lost in the mountains, there can be a powerful instinct to think, civilization is downhill. Sometimes it is. But in the Coast Mountains, downhill often means following water.

Small drainages become gullies. Gullies become waterfalls. Slopes become cliff bands. Vegetation becomes thicker. What looked passable from above can gradually become terrain you cannot safely descend — or climb back out of.

That is essentially what happened here. Stanislav followed what he believed was the sound of Highway 99 downhill. Instead, the sound drew him farther onto the opposite side of the mountain. He eventually slipped and fell - it could have been much worse.

A navigation problem had become an injury and survival problem.

Stopping also gives Search and Rescue something incredibly valuable: a stationary target. Every kilometre a lost person continues travelling can expand the area searchers have to consider.

#3 SOLO TRAVEL

Most of us in SAR have hiked or travelled in the mountains alone. We understand the appeal of moving at your own pace and spending a day alone in the mountains.

But solo travel is a safety trade-off, and the consequences change dramatically with the objective.

There is a huge difference between hiking alone on a well-travelled trail and travelling alone through remote, complex terrain where a simple fall can leave you unable to move.

As the terrain becomes more consequential, the importance of having a partner increases.

Once you are travelling through exposed 4th or 5th class terrain, scrambling above serious fall consequences, crossing glaciers or entering remote terrain where self-rescue may be extremely difficult, our preference is simple:

Don’t go alone.

Stanislav’s experience demonstrates why. After his fall, he had a fractured heel and cracked wrist. There was nobody beside him to help assess his injuries, retrace the route, call for help, provide first aid, share equipment or move somewhere more visible.

A partner also gives you something technology cannot: another person making decisions when you are injured, exhausted, frightened or starting to make poor ones.

The more consequential and remote the objective, the stronger the case for a partner.

#4 SOUND TRAVEL

Human voices don’t carry particularly well through our coastal forests. Dense vegetation, terrain, wind and background noise can dramatically reduce how far a shout can be heard. In many conditions, a human voice may not be heard much beyond 200 metres — and sometimes considerably less.

Now add rushing water.

Stanislav sheltered near a waterfall, which gave him an essential source of water but also surrounded him with continuous background noise. A person can be surprisingly close to a ground search team and still be impossible to hear.

A whistle is far more effective than repeatedly shouting. It is loud, distinctive and takes considerably less energy. Three deliberate blasts is a recognized distress signal.

When helicopters are involved or nearby, shouting and whistling will be overwhelmed by the engines, rotors and downwash. We won't hear you.

Your tactic to get rescued should change: 

Ground searchers: make noise.
Helicopter: make yourself visible.

#5 EMERGENCY KIT

One small detail in Stanislav’s story really stands out — his lighter.

During a moment of considerable stress, he chose to light a cigar. Perhaps the familiar ritual gave him a moment to calm himself and collect his thoughts, but lighting that cigar exhausted his lighter.

Later, when a fire could have provided warmth and given searchers another way to find him, he no longer had a reliable way to make one.

There’s a useful lesson here that extends well beyond lighters. When something goes wrong, take inventory of what you have and protect your limited resources.Battery power, food, water, light, fire-starting equipment and emergency communications can suddenly become extraordinarily valuable.

What seems expendable at the beginning of an emergency may become essential several hours — or several days — later.

#6 CLOTHING CONTRAST

Stanislav was wearing a black T-shirt and black shorts — colours that disappear remarkably well into Coast Mountain terrain. When he heard and saw helicopters searching for him, he tried to help. He waved an off-white T-shirt to attract their attention.

But white isn’t necessarily high visibility in the mountains. Against dark forest it can provide excellent contrast, but against granite, pale rock, cloud or snow, it can blend into the landscape.

Either way, it wasn’t enough.

There is research into which colours are easiest to see in wilderness environments, but the important principle isn’t that there is one perfect colour for every mountain environment.

It’s contrast.

AdventureSmart has made this point in its own visibility messaging: dark and neutral tones may look great, but outdoors they disappear. Bright reds, yellows and oranges can stand out dramatically against trees, rock and snow.

Season matters too. AdventureSmart recommends bright blue as a particularly useful high-visibility colour in fall, when reds, yellows and oranges can begin blending into autumn vegetation.

You don’t need to replace your entire outdoor wardrobe or hike dressed head-to-toe like a traffic cone. One deliberately high-visibility item can make a difference— a bright shell, hat, pack cover, or emergency bivy will do.

From a helicopter, searchers aren’t looking at a person-sized object against a clean background. They’re looking across kilometres of enormously complex terrain — trees, shadows, rock, gullies and vegetation — trying to identify one tiny anomaly.

Stanislav could see the helicopters. The helicopters couldn’t see Stanislav.

#7 SAR TECHNOLOGY & TACTICS

This search involved an extraordinary amount of technology, but every technology searches for something different and every one has limitations.

FLIR & NVGs

Daytime searching in dense Coast Mountain forest can be extraordinarily difficult. At night, the odds can change in your favour. 

North Shore Rescue has night-vision goggles (NVGs) that can be used during night helicopter operations. NVGs amplify extremely small amounts of available light.

That makes tiny light sources incredibly valuable. A headlamp that seems insignificant on the ground can stand out like a lighthouse beacon in an ocean of dark trees.

Under the right conditions, even the glow from a cellphone screen can be noticeable through NVGs. So can the faint glow from a small or smouldering fire.

Then there is FLIR thermal imaging.

NVGs amplify light. FLIR detects heat.

A person or fire may create a thermal signature that stands out from the cooler surrounding terrain. Dense canopy, terrain, weather and line of sight can still hide that signature, but thermal imaging gives searchers another way of looking at the mountain.

If you hear a search helicopter, start signalling immediately. Turn on your headlamp. Flash or move it deliberately. Use your cellphone screen if that’s all you have. Wave your brightest clothing. Move into an opening if you can.

Make a fire. It provides warmth, and at night its glow may be visible through NVGs while its heat may be detectable with FLIR.

RECCO

There are other technologies available that weren’t used in this particular search but are worth knowing about.

One is RECCO.

Most people associate RECCO with avalanche rescue, but it isn’t only a winter technology. RECCO reflectors are built into some jackets, pants, boots, helmets, backpacks, harnesses and other outdoor equipment.

The reflector is passive: it has no battery, requires no activation and doesn’t stop working because your cellphone has died.

That becomes particularly interesting during a prolonged wilderness search.

Your cellphone may be dead. You may be badly injured, unable to communicate or, in the worst-case scenario, unconscious. If SAR knows your clothing or equipment contains a RECCO reflector, there is another electronic signature we may be able to search for.

North Shore Rescue has the RECCO SAR Helicopter Detector. Instead of searching only from the ground with a handheld detector, the much larger detector is carried beneath a helicopter and can sweep the terrain below for RECCO reflectors.

This is another reason your family should know what you carry.

During a prolonged search, Search Managers may start asking very detailed questions: What jacket was he wearing? What pants? What backpack? What boots? Does any of that equipment contain a RECCO reflector?

Those questions may seem strangely specific to a worried family member. There is a reason we’re asking.

As one search technology reaches its limitations, we start looking for another way to detect you.

Your cellphone may provide information through the cellular network or LifeSeeker. Your headlamp, phone screen or fire may become visible through NVGs. Your body or fire may produce a thermal signature detectable with FLIR. Bright clothing may provide the visual contrast that searchers or drones need. A RECCO reflector may provide another electronic target.

No single technology makes a person automatically findable.

But every one gives searchers another chance to distinguish you from the mountain.

PROBABILITY OF DETECTION

There is a fundamental concept in ground Search and Rescue called Probability of Detection, or POD.

Put simply: if the missing person is actually in the area we’re searching, how likely are we to detect them?

POD changes dramatically with terrain, vegetation, weather, visibility and the type of search being conducted.

In some of the most heavily vegetated zones around Habrich, ground searchers sometimes had an effective visual range of only about three metres.

Searchers can essentially be floating on top of layers of coastal vegetation — blueberry bushes, alder, devil’s club, young conifers and deadfall. In places, it’s so thick you can barely see your own feet.

A person could be five metres away and be completely invisible.

That’s why a line on a search map doesn’t mean everything around that line was "seen". Searching an area and seeing everything in it are two very different things.

This is also why areas may be searched repeatedly and from different directions. Every pass is another opportunity for detection.

CONCLUSION

After several days, Stanislav’s injured foot had improved enough that he decided to move. He slowly continued down the mountain, eventually reaching the road.

On Friday, September 4, after five nights in the mountains, he emerged onto the Indian Arm Forest Service Road and encountered a construction worker who connected him with search crews nearby.

He had walked himself out.

His survival is remarkable and so is the lesson contained in those yellow lines.

The map doesn’t show that searchers somehow failed to see something obvious. It shows just how extraordinarily difficult it can be to find one human being in the Coast Mountains — even when searchers are in the right general area, aircraft are flying overhead, teams are on the ground and sophisticated search technology is being thrown at the problem.

It's a needle in a haystack. 

We are relieved this one turned out well and Stanislav has been reunited with his loving family.
