When the Mountains Get Hot, They Start to Fall

As our climate changes, so do the mountains—and the risks we face in them.

Our thoughts are with the family, friends, climbing partners, and everyone affected by the tragic rockfall on Mount Rainier this Sunday.

For many people, a hot day in the mountains means packing extra water.

For mountaineers, it means rising temperatures are fundamentally increasing objective hazards.

As temperatures rise, mountains begin to change. Snow bridges weaken. Glaciers retreat. Ice that has supported loose rock for decades melts away. Frozen ground that once acted like natural cement begins to thaw. Cracks widen, cliffs become less stable, and glaciers continue to deform and fracture. The result is a greater likelihood of rockfall and serac collapse. The Disappointment Cleaver (DC) route on Mount Rainier, where Sunday’s tragedy occurred, is one example of terrain where these seasonal changes are well recognized and objective hazards increase as the summer progresses.

These changes are already reshaping mountaineering around the world.

Not long ago, many classic alpine routes traditionally came into condition in May or June. Today, many are being climbed in April. At first glance, that sounds like a longer climbing season.

In reality, it often means the safe climbing window is shifting earlier—and becoming shorter.

By late summer, many routes have lost the snow and ice that once stabilized them. In Chamonix, some guiding companies no longer offer Augustascents on certain high-alpine objectives because the objective hazards have become too great. Instead, many of these climbs are now scheduled earlier in the season, when colder temperatures and remaining snow provide more stable conditions. Other routes are just gone.

We’re seeing changes closer to home as well. Climbers on the Stawamus Chiefand throughout Southwest British Columbia have observed changing mountain conditions during prolonged periods of heat. In the last five years it seems rockfall has been more common.

For Search and Rescue teams, these aren’t simply observations—they’re operational realities. Rescue crews are increasingly responding in mountain environments that are changing faster than many of us have experienced before.

The mountains we learned twenty years ago are not the mountains we climb today. As the climate changes, so do the conditions, the seasons, and the hazards that climbers and rescuers must manage.

We also want to recognize the mountain rescue teams, park rangers, helicopter crews, and medical personnel who responded with professionalism, courage, and compassion under extremely hazardous alpine conditions.

Our thoughts are with everyone whose lives have been forever changed by this tragic accident.
